The Backstory: Why Did This Happen?

Israel’s Rebellion

At this time, Israel was divided into two kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south. The northern kingdom, led by King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, had turned away from God to worship Baal, a false god of rain and fertility.

Who Was Baal?

• Baal was believed to control the weather, crops, and fertility.
• People thought they had to please Baal to get rain and good harvests.

The Problem:
Israel’s worship of Baal wasn’t just a mistake—it was a direct rejection of God. This led to a spiritual drought in the land, both literally and figuratively.

Who Was Elijah?

A Prophet With a Mission

Elijah was a bold prophet chosen by God to confront Israel’s sin. His name means “My God is Yahweh,” and he lived up to it by standing firm in his faith, even when everyone else turned away.

Elijah’s First Miracle:
Before the showdown, Elijah prayed for a drought to show that Baal (the so-called “weather god”) had no power. For three and a half years, not a single drop of rain fell on Israel.

The Showdown on Mount Carmel

The Challenge

Elijah confronted King Ahab and challenged the 450 prophets of Baal to a test:

1. Each side would prepare a bull as an offering.
2. The prophets of Baal would pray to their god, and Elijah would pray to Yahweh.
3. The god who answered with fire would be proven as the true God.

Elijah’s Bold Words:
“How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” (1 Kings 18:21)

The Prophets of Baal Try (and Fail)

The prophets of Baal prayed, danced, and even cut themselves to get Baal’s attention—but nothing happened.

Elijah’s Mockery:
Elijah didn’t hold back. He teased them, saying, “Shout louder! Maybe Baal is busy, sleeping, or traveling!” (1 Kings 18:27).

Lesson: False gods can’t answer prayers because they don’t exist. Only the one true God has power.

Elijah’s Turn

Elijah prepared his altar with 12 stones (representing the 12 tribes of Israel) and dug a trench around it. He even poured water on the offering—three times!—to make it harder for fire to start.

Why Water?
Elijah wanted to prove that only God could burn a soaking-wet offering.

Fire From Heaven

Elijah prayed a simple prayer:
“Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” (1 Kings 18:36)

Immediately, fire fell from heaven and burned up the offering, the wood, the stones, and even the water in the trench!

When all the people saw this, they fell on their faces and cried, “The Lord—He is God! The Lord—He is God!” (1 Kings 18:39).

The End of the Drought
Elijah told Ahab to go eat and drink because he could hear the sound of rain. While Ahab went to do that, Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel and prayed for rain. Soon, there was a small cloud, and it grew and brought rain. The drought had ended because Elijah had faith in God, and the people now knew who the true God was.

1. God is the One True God

The fire from heaven proved that Yahweh is the only real God. Baal, the false god, couldn’t answer his prophets’ cries, but God answered Elijah’s prayer instantly.

• When you’re tempted to put something above God, ask yourself: “Can this give me what only God can provide?”

2. Faith Requires Boldness

Elijah didn’t just sit back and hope things would change—he took action. He challenged the prophets of Baal, built an altar, and prayed with confidence.
