Saul Conversion on the Road to Damascus
Chapter 1: The Journey to Damascus
One day, Saul heard that there were more followers of Jesus in a city called Damascus. He was furious. He went to the high priest and asked for letters authorizing him to arrest anyone he found who followed Jesus (Acts 9:1-2). With these letters in hand, Saul gathered a group of men and set off on the journey to Damascus.
The trip would take several days, and as Saul rode his horse, he probably thought about how he would stop these “heretics.” But God had a surprise waiting for him.
Chapter 2: The Blinding Light
As Saul and his companions neared Damascus, something extraordinary happened. Suddenly, a bright light from heaven flashed around Saul, brighter than the sun! The light was so intense that it knocked Saul to the ground (Acts 9:3-4).
Then, a voice spoke: “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”
Trembling, Saul asked, “Who are You, Lord?”
The voice replied, “I am Jesus, the One you are persecuting.”
Saul was stunned. He had been persecuting Jesus’ followers, but Jesus Himself was speaking to him! Jesus continued, “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
The men traveling with Saul were speechless. They heard the voice but saw no one (Acts 9:7). When Saul got up, he opened his eyes—but he couldn’t see anything. The bright light had blinded him. His companions had to lead him by the hand into Damascus.
Chapter 3: Three Days of Darkness
For three days, Saul was blind. He didn’t eat or drink. He sat in the darkness, praying and thinking about what had happened. Maybe he remembered the stories he had heard about Jesus—how He healed the blind, fed the hungry, and even raised the dead. Maybe he thought about Stephen, the man he had watched die for his faith.
Meanwhile, in Damascus, a man named Ananias had a vision. Jesus appeared to him and said, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying. In a vision, he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”
Ananias was afraid. He had heard about Saul and the harm he had done to Jesus’ followers. But Jesus reassured him, saying, “Go! This man is My chosen instrument to carry My name before the Gentiles, their kings, and the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for My name.” (Acts 9:10-16).
Chapter 4: A New Beginning
Ananias obeyed. He went to the house where Saul was staying, placed his hands on him, and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again! He got up, was baptized, and ate some food to regain his strength (Acts 9:17-19).
Saul stayed in Damascus for a few days, preaching in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. People were amazed. “Isn’t this the man who caused such havoc in Jerusalem?” they asked. “Didn’t he come here to arrest Jesus’ followers?”
But Saul—who began using his Roman name, Paul—continued to preach boldly. He proved that Jesus is the Messiah, and many people believed (Acts 9:20-22).
Chapter 5: Paul’s New Mission
Paul’s transformation didn’t stop in Damascus. He became one of the most passionate followers of Jesus, traveling far and wide to share the good news. He faced many challenges—shipwrecks, beatings, imprisonment—but he never stopped telling people about Jesus (2 Corinthians 11:23-28).
Paul wrote letters to churches, encouraging them and teaching them about God’s love. These letters, known as the Pauline Epistles, make up a large part of the New Testament.
