What Is a Parable?
A parable is a special story that Jesus told to teach us important lessons about God and His kingdom. The Parable of the Wedding Banquet is one of the most exciting stories Jesus shared, and it teaches us about God's amazing invitation to everyone!
The Wedding Banquet (Matthew 22:1-14)
Once Upon a Time, There Was a King
Jesus told this story to help people understand what God's kingdom is like:
Once there was a very important king who had a son. The king was so happy that his son was getting married that he planned the biggest, most wonderful wedding party anyone had ever seen!
The King Sends Out Invitations
The king told his servants, "Go and invite all the special guests I have chosen. Tell them about the amazing feast I have prepared. We have the best food, the most beautiful decorations, and everything is ready for the celebration!"
The servants went out and delivered the invitations to all the people the king had chosen. But guess what happened? The people said, "No, thank you. We're too busy."
Can you imagine? They turned down an invitation from the king!
The King Tries Again
The king didn't give up. He sent his servants out a second time with an even better message: "Tell them the feast is ready right now! I have prepared the finest foods, the tables are set, and everything is perfect. Come to the wedding banquet!"
But the people still didn't care. Some ignored the invitation and went back to their farms and businesses. Others were even meaner and hurt the king's servants!
The King Gets Angry but Has a New Plan
The king was very angry that people had rejected his invitation and hurt his servants. But then he had a wonderful idea!
He told his servants, "Those people I invited first didn't deserve to come to my party. So go out into the streets and invite everyone you can find. Invite the good people and the bad people. Invite the rich and the poor. Invite everyone to come to my son's wedding!"
Everyone Is Welcome!
The servants went out into the streets, roads, and highways. They invited everyone they met, just like the king said. Soon, the wedding hall was filled with guests. People who never thought they would be invited to a king's party were sitting at the table, enjoying the feast!
The Man Without Wedding Clothes
As the king walked through the hall greeting his guests, he noticed one man who wasn't wearing the right clothes for a wedding. The king asked him, "Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?"
The man had no answer. You see, the king had provided special wedding clothes for all his guests, but this man refused to wear them. He wanted to come to the party his own way.
Because the man refused the king's gift, the king had to ask him to leave.
The End of the Story
Jesus ended this parable by saying, "Many are invited, but few are chosen." This means that God invites everyone to be part of His kingdom, but not everyone accepts His invitation the right way.
Important Lessons for Kids
Lesson 1: God Invites Everyone
God wants everyone to be part of His family. No matter who you are or what you've done, God is calling you to come to Him. His invitation is open to all!
Lesson 2: Don't Wait to Say "Yes" to God
The people in the story made excuses and said they were too busy. We should never be too busy for God. When we hear about Jesus and His love, the best thing we can do is say "yes" right away!
Lesson 3: Other Things Can Seem More Important
The people in the story cared more about their farms and businesses than the king's invitation. Sometimes we can care more about games, friends, or activities than God. We need to remember that God should be the most important thing in our lives.
Lesson 4: We Need Jesus
We can't come to God on our own or in our own way. We need Jesus! Just like the guests needed to wear the wedding clothes the king provided, we need to accept Jesus as our Savior.
Lesson 5: God's Invitation Is Urgent
The feast was ready and the king wanted people to come right away. God's invitation is important and urgent. We should respond to God today, not wait until later.
Fun Activities to Remember This Parable
Activity 1: Create Your Own Invitation
What You Need:
- Paper or cardstock
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Stickers or decorations
What to Do: Design a beautiful invitation to God's kingdom. Decorate it with your favorite colors and write "You're Invited to God's Kingdom!" at the top. You can give these invitations to friends and family to remind them that God invites everyone!
Activity 2: Wedding Banquet Snack Time
What You Need:
- Special snacks (crackers, fruit, cheese, juice)
- Nice plates or napkins
- A table
What to Do: Set up a special "feast" with your family. As you enjoy the snacks together, talk about how God's kingdom will be even better than the best party on earth! Thank God for His invitation.

- Simple costumes (optional)
What to Do: Act out the parable! Assign roles: the king, servants, people who say no, and people from the streets. Take turns playing different parts. This helps you remember the story and understand each character's choices.
