Gideon's Call
A Surprise Visitor
One day, Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites, who were very mean and would take away food from the Israelites. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, "The Lord is with you, mighty warrior" (Judges 6:12). Gideon was surprised and a bit scared. He couldn't believe he was called a mighty warrior!
God's Special Mission
The angel told Gideon that God had chosen him to save Israel from the Midianites. Gideon was confused. He thought he was too weak and unimportant. But the angel said, "Go in the strength you have... I will be with you" (Judges 6:14-16).
The Test of Faith
Gideon's Fleece
Gideon wanted to be sure that God was really speaking to him. So, he asked for a sign. He put a fleece of wool on the ground and said, "If dew is only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand" (Judges 6:37). And guess what? The next morning, the fleece was wet, and the ground was dry!
A Second Sign
Still unsure, Gideon asked for another sign. This time, he wanted the fleece to be dry and the ground wet. And God did just that to show Gideon His power and plan.
Building an Army
Too Many Soldiers?
Gideon gathered a big army, but God had a surprise. He told Gideon that there were too many soldiers! If they won with such a big army, they might think they did it without God's help. So, God had a plan to make the army smaller.
The Water Test
God told Gideon to take the men to the water and watch how they drank. Some men lapped the water with their hands, and others knelt down to drink. God said to keep only the 300 men who lapped with their hands. Now, Gideon had a tiny army to fight a huge enemy!
The Battle Plan
A Clever Idea
God gave Gideon a clever plan. He divided the 300 men into three groups. Each man had a trumpet and a jar with a torch inside.
A Surprising Attack
In the middle of the night, they surrounded the Midianite camp. At Gideon's signal, they blew their trumpets, broke the jars, and shouted, "For the Lord and for Gideon!" The Midianites were so scared and confused that they started fighting each other and ran away!
Victory and Peace
A Great Triumph
Gideon and his tiny army won a great victory with God's help. It showed that no matter how small or weak we feel, with God, we can do great things.
Peace at Last
After the battle, there was peace in the land for 40 years. Gideon became a judge and a hero, but he always remembered that it was God who gave him the strength and the victory.
Fun Time!
Hey kids, let's have some fun! Can you draw a picture of Gideon and his small army with their trumpets and torches? Imagine how they surprised the big, mean Midianite army!
